Popular Sites to Apply to College
Applying to college can be complex, but these popular centralized application platforms allow you to apply to multiple schools with one application. Be sure to check which platform your list of colleges accepts!
1. The Common Application (Common App)
- Best for: Students applying to a wide range of public and private colleges and universities across the U.S. and some internationally. More than 1,000 schools accept the Common App.
- What to Know: It is a centralized system where you fill out one set of forms (family details, educational history, extracurricular activities), write one main personal essay, and then add school-specific supplemental materials.

2. The Common Black College Application (CBCA)
- Best for: Students specifically interested in applying to Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs).
- What to Know: The CBCA allows students to apply to many member HBCUs at the same time for one flat, affordable fee. It is designed to simplify and streamline the application process for students choosing to attend an HBCU.
- Create a Common App account at commonapp.org.
- Add at least one college to your college list
- Go to the "Recommenders and FERPA" section under the "My Colleges" tab and complete the FERPA Release Authorization.
- If you are using the Common App, you MUST pair it with your school Naviance account. This pairing is the only way your school counselor can electronically send your official transcripts, school report, and teacher recommendations to your colleges.
